What is the meaning of Muhurta in Vedic Astrology

Muhurta is a small Vedic time frame to decide an auspicious and inauspicious time frame to do any events. As per the Vedic concept, our Vedic Var(Day) start from Sunrise and ends at the next Sunrise. In a Vedic Var, we have 60 Ghati and 30 Muhurta.

So, 1 Muhurta will be equal to 2 Ghati which is approx. 48 minutes. Among 30 Muhurta 15 will be day muhurta and 15 will be night muhurta.

Name of Day Muhurta

As per the classical way the time frame between Sunrise to Sunset is known as Daytime. So, when we divide Daytime by 15 then we get a 15-day muhurta. The name of Day Muhurta will be listed below

  1. Shiva or Rudra – Considered inauspicious in nature. One of the forms of Lord Shiva.  
  2. Sarpa or Ahi – Consider inauspicious in nature. Sarpa means snake.
  3. Mitra or Surya – Consider auspicious in nature. One of the names of Surya.
  4. Pitra – Consider inauspicious in nature. Pitra is related to our forefathers.
  5. Vasu – Consider auspicious in nature. Vasu is the Vedic God, who ruled over 5 elements and Sun, Moon & Star.
  6. Jala or Udaka – Consider auspicious in nature. Some texts mentioned Udaka as Varaha which is one of the forms of Vishnu who saved the earth.
  7. Vishwadeva – Consider auspicious in nature. Vishwadeva is related to Universal God who will fulfill all wishes of the Universe.
  8. Abhijeet – Very auspicious in nature. Abhijeet means who is always getting the victory. So, any work done during Abhijeet will be fruitful.
  9. Brahma – Auspicious in nature. Brahma is the creator of the world.
  10. Indra – Auspicious in nature. Indra is the Lord of havens and Supreme God related to Power.
  11. Indragni – Inauspicious in nature. Indragni is related to the fire of Indra which is considered dangerous in nature. Some books say Indragani muhurat as Vahini, which is related to the vehicle force of God.
  12. Rakshasa or Niriti – Inauspicious in nature. Niriti is the goddess of disease & death and the wife of Adharma.
  13. Varuna – Auspicious in nature. Varun is the God of water.
  14. Aryaman – Auspicious in nature. Aryaman is the God who is the witness of oaths in Vedic rituals.
  15. Bhaga – Inauspicious in nature. But Bhaga is God of wealth and prosperity.
30 Vedic Muhurta

Name of Night Muhurta

In the same way, when we divide Ratriman( time between Sunset to next Sunrise) into 15 equal parts then we get 15 night muhurta.  

  1. Rudra – Consider inauspicious in nature. Destructive form of lord Shiva.
  2. Ajaikapada – Consider inauspicious in nature. One of the 11 Rudra.
  3. Ahirbudhnya – Consider auspicious in nature. Ahirbudhnya is a serpent god.
  4. Pusha – Consider auspicious in nature. Pusha is related to growth and prosperity.
  5. Ashwani Kumar – Consider auspicious in nature. Ashwani Kumar is the God of medicine.
  6. Yama – Consider inauspicious in nature. Yama is related to the lord of death.
  7. Agni – Consider inauspicious in nature. Agni is the God of fire.
  8. Brahma or Dhatri – Consider auspicious in nature. Brahma is the creator of the universe.
  9. Chandrama – Consider auspicious in nature. Chandrama is related to Moon.
  10. Aditi – Consider auspicious in nature. Aditi is the mother of all Aditya.
  1. Devguru Brihaspati – Very auspicious in nature. Brihaspati is the Guru of all gods.
  2. Vishnu – Auspicious in nature. Vishnu is the supreme God or Sustainer of all universe.
  3. Surya– Auspicious in nature. Surya is the Sun.
  4. Twasta – Auspicious in nature. Twasta is God who is one of Aditya.
  5. Vayu – Auspicious in nature. Vayu dev is God of Air.

All above muhurta has nature as per their name. So, we can use any muhurat as per our requirements.

Exempted Muhurta

  • We should avoid Aryaman on Sunday.
  • Rakshasa and Brahma on Monday.
  • Pitra and Agni on Tuesday.
  • Abhijeet on the day of Wednesday.
  • Rakshasa and Jala on Thursday.
  • Brahma and Pitra on Friday.
  • Sarpa and Shiva on the day of Saturday.

Use of Muhurta in Vedic Astrology

We should try to use auspicious muhurat for auspicious acts. Abhijit muhurta is frequently used for success in any work.
